Training Programs

At the inception of Fitness From Africa more than a decade ago, there were very few training programs available either on the internet or coaching services as a whole. Nowadays running programs are a dime a dozen and the click of a button will present you with a detailed training program complete with cherries on the top! After all, it’s pretty easy to slap some training runs onto a spreadsheet and piling on the sessions towards the goal event. Some of these may be effective and some not.

At Fitness From Africa we pride ourselves in the fact that programs have been carefully formulated according to the following principles:

  • Progressive adaptation – i.e. the body’s way of getting used to what it is faced with and overcoming it;
  • Progressive overload – i.e. steadily increasing training demands at a pace slow enough to prevent break-down and fast enough to get to desired results;
  • Holistic approach to conditioning factors – i.e. taking into account a variety of variable that affect the possibility of success, including energy system development, nutrition, strength, speed, flexibility, restoration, sports psychology and human nature;
  • Scrutinized techniques of some of the world’s great coaches; 
  • Personal trial and error efforts over the past thirty years of running and coaching. When following a training program one can expect one of the following three outcomes: 
  • Building up the athlete; 
  • Breaking down the athlete; 
  • Maintaining what has been established. 


Adding components to a program such as speed, mileage or number of sessions is not as easy as it may sound. The assumption is that it will increase levels of performance, but just one run too many may result in breakdown or injury. Human nature is to get started before we are ready, and to stop before we have exhausted all possible avenues. The ideal is to have controlled patience at the outset of a training program or an event, and single-minded determination in the closing chapter.
